Office skirt

Besides experimenting with different draped designs (which I still don’t fully master) I’m working on a office skirt. Most skirts are for standing or walking and are basically just a square piece of fabric wrapped around the body with a few darts at the waist. When you want to sit down in a tight (pencil) skirt the front and sides gather and can get uncomfartable. What I want is a skirt (andĀ pants) thatĀ has a perfect fit on the bike and on an office chair. It is probably inventing the wheel all over again, but I like to look into this pattern problem. I made a toile from paper and tape and it fits perfectly, but when I stand up it doesn’t. So I need to add some space in the front and back or make a skirt that lies between a skirt for standing up and sitting. The obvious solution would be creating a skirt from strechy fabric, but the idea is to follow the body in a certain position, in this case sitting on a chair behind a desk. The idea to take a certain posture comes from Aitor Throup. He designs for different body postures. Another inspiration is the motor suite, this leather suite is designed to sit on a motor and is less suitable to walk around in.

Pattern Magic and non standard bodies

Currently I am working on the first two books of the Pattern Magic series. I teach myself how to manipulate patterns and experiment with shapes. I want to find a balance between a certain shape and the human body. I am particularly interested in non standard bodies, like people who have difficulties tofind something suitable a stores with just standard sizes. Bodies are not standard! I am amazed that cloths for plus sizes are just patterns made larger in a way that the overal balance becomes distorted. For example the arm holes are too big or shoulder lines are lined at the upper arm instead the shoulder. For now I have enough friends who I use as guina pigs to try and design patterns for. When ready I will post the ready garments here on this blog.
